A key part of Folly Farm's conservation strategy is what we do
at the park to reduce the impact we have on our local environment -
our green credentials.
In October 2007 the park implemented an environmental advisory
team - our green team - to set about formalising our green
practices and further delivering on our commitment to
conservation.
The green team is tasked with researching other ways we can
further conserve energy, cut wastage and reuse and recycle
more.
Initiatives already put in place include;
Recycling bins for the public to add
to the recycling skips used for the park's own waste products.
Allocation of staff to check lights
and electrical equipment is turned off.
Recycling of waste timber for the
heating of Folly Farm staff accommodation.
Recycling of used cooking oil from
the food outlets which is then refined and used for fuel to deliver
fresh oil.
Replacement of disposable cups,
sachets of sugar, coffee etc. from the staff rooms with china and
large catering containers of coffee etc. to reduce packaging.
The latest initiative is the replacement of 10,000 light bulbs on
the funfair rides with a 70% more energy efficient version.
The cost was £25,000 but cost savings alone are already being seen
with energy usage for May 2011 less than the month of February when
opening hours were weekends only.
