The African Grey Parrot is a medium-sized Parrot
native to the rainforests of West and Central
Africa. Experts regard it as one of the most intelligent
birds. They feed primarily on palm nuts, seeds, fruits, leafy
matter, but have been observed eating snails. Their overall gentle
nature and their inclination and ability to mimic speech have made
them popular pets and in captivity they can live up to to 70 years
of age.
Creature Feature: Buster
Buster was donated to Folly Farm when his owner sadly passed
away. In a state of mourning poor Buster plucked his chest
feathers, a sign of distress in African Grey Parrots, and they
still haven't completely grown back. If you live in Wales
then you may remember Buster's sad story from the ITV Wales
News! Buster now shares an enclosure with three other African
Grey Parrots and a lot of enrichment work is being carried out by
the Zoo Keepers to ensure he's entertained.
