Barn Owls are found on all continents, except Antarctica, and
rate as the most widespread species of owl in the world. However
changes in farming methods have affected their hunting grounds,
reducing the prey available to them and barn conversions have
resulted in fewer nesting sites. These small changes have
resulted in the Barn Owl becoming increasingly rare in some areas
where it previously thrived. Areas that contain hedgerows, long
grasslands, and old buildings are the preferred habitat for these
nocturnal birds.
CREATURE FEATURE: ACHILLES
Hatched in April 2006 and hand-reared by our head zoo keeper
Lynsey, Achilles is one of the friendliest animals at Folly Farm.
At home sitting on people's arms as much as she is flying
around the park, Achilles is a natural star. Part of the
keepers' daily routine is to make sure that all our Owls are given
the chance to fly outside of their aviaries and Achilles has taken
to her flying lessons incredibly well flying straight to the
keepers for food every time (well almost every time!).
