Mediterranean Tortoises is a common name given to a group containing Spur-thighed, Herman's and Marginated Tortoises.  Several species are under threat mainly from habitat destruction.  Land-dwelling reptiles, Tortoises are generally reclusive animals and protect themselves from predators with a hard shell or "carapace", an external skeleton.  The Tortoise also has an internal skeleton.  Tortoises have lifespans comparable to human beings.
