New Giraffe Joins the Ranks

LITTLE BIGHORN JOINS THE RANKS AT FOLLY FARM

Photos: Sillan, aka Little Bighorn, is easily distinguishable by his lop-sided horns

23 November 2010, Folly Farm, Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire: Folly Farm today proudly unveiled another member of its giraffe herd. Sillan, fondly known as Little Bighorn, in reference to the uneven length of his horns, joins the four other males, Rafiki, Zulu, Taharqa and Rian in one of the largest bachelor herds of giraffe in the UK.  Born at Belfast Zoo and joining Folly Farm from South Lakes Wildlife Park, Sillan is a stocky six year old Rothschild hybrid and has been re-homed in Pembrokeshire as part of a European Breeding Programme which now allows South Lakes to continue breeding whilst protecting the blood lines of its herd.

Tim Morphew, Zoo Manager at Folly Farm, said; "We're delighted to have taken delivery of another giraffe and to be able to help further the breeding programme at South Lakes.  Sillan is settling in well with his housemates and is sure to make an impression on visitors as he is so easy to distinguish by his little left horn!"

Chris Ebsworth, Folly Farm's Managing Director, added; "The arrival of Sillan marks another important chapter in Folly Farm's development.  Our giraffe house enclosure is one of the best in Europe and now houses one of the largest bachelor herds in the UK.  The approval from the Giraffe stud book to continue placing giraffe here is testament to those facilities and the trust placed in our keeping staff."
