FOLLY FARM AIM TO EDUCATE AND ENTERTAIN
New management role created to develop curriculum
linked edcuation programme
28 June 2010, Folly Farm, Kilgetty,
Pembrokeshire: Folly Farm's mission to "Educate and
Entertain" is being taken to the next level as they invest in a new
education role.
Victoria Smathers has been appointed as the new Education and Marketing Manager and will be developing a curriculum linked education programme to connect with schools.
Currently most of the school visits are booked as an end of term treat or a trip around the zoo and farm with teachers leading the education experience. This new programme is intended to encourage a more focused curriculum package for schools working towards Learning Outside the Classroom status, with dedicated workshops, education packs, school talks and more.
Victoria, who is a trained teacher but has also worked in Theatre in Education for the past 15 years, will be using her education and drama skills to create an interactive, sensory and fun learning experience for pupils.
She said "There's so much potential here with the farm, the nature trail, the hands on pet area and of course the zoo, that actually the difficulty will be in trying not to do too much all at once but introduce the programme gradually and work with schools and the education authorities to deliver a package relevant to their needs.
We have the opportunity here, at Folly Farm, to offer direct curriculum linked sessions on scientific enquiry and life processes, with geography on endangered species and how environmental change effects habitats, on camouflage and pattern, food chains etc. etc. The potential is huge, and I'm really excited to be able to contribute to an already enthusiastic education minded team in creating an interactive and inspiring learning experience."
Folly Farm has been continually reinvesting in its product and activities, which is why Chris Ebsworth, Managing Director at Folly Farm said; "We are not feeling the effects of the current economic difficulties, in fact we've been experiencing an uplift in visitor numbers and guest spend per head is up at the park so this is an ideal time to reinvest again and create a new education programme providing another valuable resource to the local community."
