Off to Pastures New

Last month we said farewell to one of our zoo favourites.  Shawn, the Brazilian Tapir was the first animal Zoo Manager Tim bought to Folly Farm, so it was a particularly sad day for the zoo team but definitely a move which should be celebrated for all that Shawn has done for the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme.

Pastures New - Heading for Knowsley Safari Park

Two of Shawn's offspring Cavalo and Jerramiah, both boys, have gone with him to their new home in the fabulous Knowsley Safari Park where they will be much loved and a big hit with the visitors as they have been here in Pembrokeshire.

Love Match - Shawn and Sommer

Shawn and Sommer's love story will go down in Folly Zoo legend.  When we took delivery of Sommer we were told by the zoo which loaned her to us that they suspected she was infertile as they had tried to breed from her several times with different partners to no avail.  It would seem it was the choice of partner that was the problem or maybe the clean Welsh air did the trick, as Shawn and Sommer went on to produce the largest, familial breeding group of Tapirs in Europe with five offspring.

Folly Farm's contribution to the captive breeding programme for this endangered species has been significant and we are proud to be sending Shawn and his male offspring to Knowsley in order that we can eventually continue our breeding efforts with a new partner for Ligea and Yarah, Shawn and Sommer's daughters, and with their genes there's bound to be even more Tapir births at Folly Farm.

Eerie Enrichment

Eerie Enrichment

There are strange goings on at the zoo this Halloween.  Enrichment activities have taken on an eerie guise with Pumpkins full of tasty treats.

Enrichment is an important part of good animal welfare.  We often provide the zoo animals with unusual objects with food hidden inside as a means of stimulating their senses and interest and Halloween pumpkins provide the perfect vessels for this.

Conservation Programme

There's much excitement on the zoo as the first week of our Five Weeks of Fundraising gets under way.  This week we're raising funds for Wildlife Vets International, just one of the conservation charities we support.  The money raised will go towards their Amur Leopard Reintroduction project which provides vets to perform health checks on the remaining 25 Amur Leopards in the wild ahead of the reintroduction of a captive population.

You can find out more information about the Amur Leopard Project at Wildlife Vets International

And you can help the cause by donating during a visit to Folly Farm or through WVI's Textgiving facility;

Text donations are brought to you by JustGiving's partnership with Vodafone.  Thanks to Vodafone, there is no fee and 100% of text
donations goes to your charity.  It's a massive commitment to the third sector and JustGiving is proud have forged this exciting and unique partnership.

Treemendous Effort

We're feeling tree-riffic on the zoo at the moment.  As part of our conservation programme we've planted 500 fast-growing Willow trees on a spare stretch of land behind the reindeer enclosure with the aim of working towards self-sufficiency in browse for our five Giraffes.

The Giraffes currently have four browse poles per day and they are munching their way through our current Willow stock!  As a responsible zoo, sustainability is top of mind so we are looking to the future by undertaking this tree planting project.

Based on a three year cycle, dictated by the Willow tree growth rate, the first row of browse will be ready for coppicing after two years, then we will move onto the second row and third rows in subsequent years and by year five the first row will have grown enough again for us to repeat the coppicing cycle.

Watch this space for further tree news...this blog post has the potential to grow and grow ;-)

Babies Force House Move

Hello, Zoo Keeper Tim here! So successful are our Cusimanse at breeding we've had to build them a new home...expecting their fourth litter since their arrival at Folly Farm two Summers ago, the Cusimanse had outgrown their old enclosure.

Their new enclosure, a very well appointed detached home offers them under floor heating, a viewing platform and access to a vast backyard!

Folly Farm's visitors will now be able to go inside their enclosure and view the Cusimanse from a glass-fronted platform giving access to these cute creatures whether they are in or out.

Kookaburra Enrichment

Hello Zoo Keeper Shelly here!  I thought you might enjoy watching this video of the Kookaburra's on my section.  Us keepers are always trying to think up new enrichment activities to keep our animals stimulated and this fake snake provided the Kookaburras with endless fun!

They swooped down as soon as they spotted it and then made sure it really wasn't real by shaking it in their beaks.  Perfect example of the natural behaviour you'd see in the wild which just shows how well they have settled since joining us from London Zoo a couple of months ago.

And there's more...

It only seems like last week that I was blogging about the arrival of the adorable Cusimanse babies...well there's more! Last week we had another four of these slender-nosed mongoose born making a bumper group of eleven!

Click here to see a short video of these little cuties and hear them happily squeaking away!

I'll keep you updated on their progress!
