Momo the Red Panda has arrived!

Our male red panda joins Ariel to make a new breeding pair

Check out this adorable little dumpling over at Asian Adventure…

Meet Momo, our new red panda who’s looking fresh faced and bushy tailed, despite his long journey from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland. Momo has joined our female red panda, Ariel, who is also new to the zoo, but has been with us for around one month after her move from Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Six year old Ariel has settled in beautifully in her new home already – and was watching curiously as her new friend arrived at the enclosure this morning. Both of our new residents have joined us as part of the European Breeding Programme for the species through our membership with EAZA, (The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). Red pandas are classed as endangered in the wild, with their numbers sadly under pressure from habitat loss through deforestation and other threats. As a zoo, part of our role is to care for these animals, support conservation work, and educate our guests on why species like the red panda need our help. We’re hopeful that the new pair will eventual breed – although Momo is only 11 months old, so he will need to wait a little while yet. We’re excited to see what their future holds as a successful breeding would mean so much for the species.

Our red panda exhibit in Asian Adventure has received an upgrade ahead of the new arrivals joining us. There’s been some home improvements to their house, along with more climbing areas, shelters and platforms installed. All of this gives the animals more room to climb, explore or find a quiet corner if they want some space. Our habitats are designed to be as natural as possible, and they allow visitors the best views – watching a red panda take a nap, climb around the branches or munch on bamboo!

Momo only arrived at the zoo this morning, but is already showing a friendly and confident personality. He seems very much at home already, so we hope our guests can spot him over the Bank Holiday weekend – but we also promise to keep you all updated with red panda spam over on our social platforms – so make sure you check in with us!
